I really think you should date someone at least 1 1/2- 2 years before you think about marriage.
If you are ready to get married, be honest about it. Tell him you would like to have a marital future with him. Don't give an ultimatum or a time limit. Be realistic--ask him if he sees himself getting married to you in the future.
If he's ready, great. If he's not, you can either wait and hope he will want to get married at some point, or break up and find someone else.

I don't think that there is any "set time limit" . My husband and i dated for 4 years before he proposed to me. don't pressure him. We talked about it off and on but i never really pushed the matter.We have been happily married for 16 years now.
